RESUMO

This study had as OBJECTIVE to evaluate chewing in subjects submitted to surgery for correcting cleft lip and palate. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We evaluated male and female 62 subjects with ages from 7 to 9 years, with mixed dentition, classified in two groups: Fissured Group (FG) and Control Group (CG). FG was constituted of 32 subjects with complete, unilateral or bilateral transforamen cleft lip and palate, with Mesocephalic face type, Normocclusion or Malocclusion, Angle Class I, submitted to surgery at the specialized Centro de Atendimento Integral ao Fissurado Lábio-Palatal CAIF, located in Curitiba PR, Brazil. The was constituted by 30 subjects without cleft lip and palate with Mesocephalic face type, Normocclusion or Malocclusion, Angle Class I, without bite alterations, from a Basic Education Public School. Responsible parents or legal tutors together with subjects, were interviewed as regards: complaints concerning chewing; difficulties for ingesting hard foods; preferences in relation to food consistency; special preparation for food ingestion; ingestion of liquids when feeding; to feed with the mouth opened or closed; pain in chewing and places where there is pain; respiratory condition. For evaluating chewing, French bread was used as testing food at moments of free chewing, and subjects were filmed. Data were compiled and processed according to rate difference test (p≤0,05) and Student test (p≤0,05), and statistically described. RESULTS: In the interview, it was observed that the female subject of FG reported statistically significantly greater difficulty in eating hard foods (p=0,0254) and female preference for soft foods (p=0,0481) for female subjects the CG. No significant difference among the groups regarding the preparation of special food and ingestion of liquids during feeding. In the evaluation of free chewing FG male subjects presented an adequate food hold significantly than that of CG male subjects. No significant difference among the groups was found as to lip position, chewing method, and jaw movements. FG female subjects presented a lesser chewing frequency in free chewing CG female subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained in this study allowed to conclude that the subjects submitted to surgery for correcting cleft lip and palate have an ideal chewing next to the normal subjects and the changes found are characteristics from the age, considering the teething phase whose the subjects were found. However, FG female subjects presented more difficulty for ingesting hard-consistency foods, more preference for soft foods and slower chewing rates than CG female subjects.
