RESUMO

This work presents the optimization of a zone melting equipment. Tin was used as the standard material for checking the apparatus performance with two different grades of purity: commercial previously purified by vacuum distillation and electrolytic without any additional treatment. The correlation between microhardness and solute concentration after zone melting, as well as microstructure and solid/liquid interface stability were used as techniques of purity characterization. The experimental results of solute distribution after zone melting were compared with theoretical predictions furnished by a numerical model developed in this work, and a good agreement was observed. Finally, a proposition for minimizing the total time of the zone melting process is presented. It is based on parameters like speed of displacement of solid/liquid interface, length of liquid zone and thermal gradient in liquid, wich are continuously monitored through a correlation of computer calculations and equipment control
