RESUMO
The grinding process is being largely used in the automobile industry, mainly in the machining of engine components, that require high dimensional quality. NormalIy the grinding machines are key machines in the machining lines and, due to represent high investments, in most of the cases they are the line botteneck, that means they are the operation with the highest cyc1e time. In the specific case of this study it wilI be studied a grinding operation performed in the main joumals of 4 cylinders engine crankshafts, whose cyc1e time is one of the highests in this line. The cyc1e time reduction in this operation wilI be achieved by the optimization of the cutting feed rates and the dressing operation, without damaging the final quality of the parto AlI tests were processed in production enviroment and the quality results evaluated were the out of roundess and roughness characteristics. The results showed that the optimization of the grinding cyc1e in industrial enviroment can bring great advantages regarding the operation cyc1e time and frequently with consequences in the production capacity of the whole line, with investments c1ose to zero. Regarding the dressing operation, the optimization possibilities had positive results, main1y regarding to the dressing feed and , of course, the roughness resulted in the part was the limit, because there was no great influence of the dressing parameters in the out of roundness results
