RESUMO

This dissertation analyzes History school textbooks from 5th to 8th grade of brazilian ensino fundamental which deal about United States and written from 1990 to 2004. To do so, there were selected twenty representative books from the period. Divided into three parts, the first deals the school textbooks as a kind of book with certain characteristics in the context of the book market, portraying simultaneously as a support to teacher, carrier of information and, occupying, year after year a bigger market share in the book business, with two thirds of the current production. In second place, this work focus into certain textbooks recorruring themes: English colonization of North America; American independence; Westward expansion; American Civil War; World Power; World War I; The Great Depression and the years between the world wars; World War II; Cold War and Modern Times. At last, the aim is understand how three aspects influences the writing of school textbook: influence of public policies in the 1990 decade; bibliography used by textbooks and the use of languages like maps, illustrations, statistics and graphs.
