RESUMO
The ever increasing demand for data traffic suggests the capacity expansion of optical communication systems. One can obtain this by increasing the number of transmitted channels in alternative optical bands. To achieve this it is necessary to develop optical amplifers for each band. The most common amplifiers are EDFA. Nevertheless, Raman amplifiers and TDFAs are very useful, specially for the S band. In this thesis a novel and efficient pump scheme for TDFA is proposed for the first time and demonstrated experimentally, using 800 nm and 1050 nm pump wavelengths. A TDFA pumped by a single diode laser indicated a real possibility for commercial development. The gain distribution along the fiber for dual pump is analysed. A TDFA using double pass configuration is also proposed, featuring gain of 38 dB using only 400 mW of pump power at 1050 nm. The wavelength dependence of the gain cross-saturation effect for TDFAs is discussed for single pump schemes (1050 nm and 1426 nm). To reduce the gain crosssaturation effect one should use gain clamping techniques. Some all-optical gain clamping techniques are investigated to build low noise EDFAs. Hybrid amplifiers composed of Raman amplifier and TDFA pumped with a single wavelength are demonstrated for wide bandwidth amplification in the S band
