RESUMO

At the end of 2001, Argentina faced the worst crisis of its history. The dual-currency system adopted in 1991 stopped a decade of high inflation that climbed in three hyperinflationary events from 1989 to 1990. The aim of this research is the study of the dual-currency system performance and its relation to the crisis of the end of 2001. The problem of this research is the comprehension if the dual-currency system was responsible or just suffered its effects. The Argentinas government induced the oficial dollarization in order to get credibility to the national currency, the peso. Nevertheless the dollarization of the banking system joined with a lack of a lender of last resort increased the vulnerability and the fragility of its financial system. The floating of peso, the corralito, and the pesification signalized the end of the Convertibility. The findings results allowed to saying that both systems did not get the desired credibility to the peso, and the crisis was born in the real economy. The debt dollarization and the mismatch currency increased the costs of exit from the Convertibility harming the financial system too
