RESUMO

This research aims to show that Parque 13 de Maio represents a mark of modernization in Recife, focusing the planned lines of the projects made from 1844 to 2001. The academic interest on the park began after observing the different planned lines of current projects that seemed to characterize particular moments, fulfilling the metropolitan cityâs needs and its constant search for political and cultural modernization. Thus, it began with the concept of a western worldâs urban park, as a public space related to the aesthetic, environmental, and entertainment quality desired by the great industrial cities since the 19th century. This knowledge allowed an investigation on the relationship between the influence of international experiences and the conception of urban parks in Brazil, and of Parque 13 de Maio in Recife. In order to analyze the planned lines of the project, the method used was the Lamas method (1993), in which the historical approach followed a formal recognition and a historical planned line, like a âspinal chordâ of the project, in other words, as a fundamental element on the structure and maintenance of the landscaping project that reveals permanencies and changes in time. Proposed and pre-existent elements were taken into consideration in the planned lines analysis to identify the changes, relating them to outside influences in the outcome of urban modernization. Thus, Parque 13 de Maio showed its historical, as well as its projectâs, strength, designating the traditional function of a contemplative park, and still trying to attend contemporary needs
