RESUMO
This theses has as object the teaching of History on the first grades of Elementary School. To apreehend the theme we reconstructed the teaching of History in a government school, Escola Maria Constança Barros Machado, situated in Campo Grande MS, from 1977 to 2002, aiming to find out the nature of the differences between the History taught at schools and the academic History and also aiming to detect the role the school culture plays in the selection and organization of the contents. Two dimensions directed towards the object of this research: How was the school subject History developed? How the school culture processed the selection of the imposed contents on the schools. The study was based on the following sources: semi-structured interviews with former teachers, statements and a questionnaire applied to former students, the documents of the school files, the report of the First Seminar on Geography and History Teaching in Mato Grosso do Sul, the relevant legislation and Political Pedagogical Project of the school. According to the results it was possible to verify that the school practices of the subject History obey external factors like legislation, curriculum and curriculum proposals and that the teachers, in their schools, used to live their way of lives, their way of acting and thinking, which were built along the years and that, in anyway, revealed the role the school culture plays in the History contents selection.
