RESUMO

Man develops itself individually and socially, regarding time, world and its own history. Such development, together with culture and social context, can be observed in the aging process. Memory, which is responsible for information aquisition, storage and reformulation, involves emotion in its process, for it only keeps what is significant and worthwhile recovering. Considering identity as a continuous construction process that results of social experience, which can be individual or collective, this study investigates perceptions about influences from social and cultural changes that happen in lives of elderly Indians of Guarani-Kaiwa ethnicity, who live in Jaguapiru tribe, in the city of Dourados, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, during the construction of their individual and collective cultural identity, in the aging process. Five elderly Indians were interviewed, two females and three males, in order to collect some histories of life. The changes and modifications that happened and were taken as positive by the elderly Indians were clothing, exchange of goods and feeding in the tribe. The changes and modifications that were considered negative by the elderly are related to preservation of Indian culture, agriculture, home and space they are given to live in, and preservation of nature. According to the elderly Indians who were interviewed, cultural changes that resulted from the process of social interaction is a constant threat to the preservation of Guarani-Kaiwa identity.
