RESUMO

For many years there has been an Interest on controlJers that automatically update their own parameters when controlling compIex processes or when the operation conditions vary. This interest has increased the number of works in adaptive controI area. The generalized minimum variance controller (GMV) is included in these works and it uses the seIf-tuning approach to update the controller settings. This controler in its standard form assumes known and constant time delay system. This work presents three strategies using GMV algorithm on controlling processes with unknown or varying dead time: (I) GMV with dead time estlmation, (II) GMV with dead time compensatlon, (III) pole-placement controller wlth GMV structure. All approaches are based on a new process model which assumes a prlorl known time delay range. This model Includes an extended polynomial on numerator which represents process zeros and it contains a fraction of time delay. The approach (I) includes two different strategies for time delay estlmatlon and it has some modifications on estimator. The approach (II) is based on classical concept of time delay compensation which uses an expIicit process model. ln this case the controller is obtained for an approximated process model with unit time delay. The approach (III) is a classical method and it is presented for comparison
