RESUMO

This thesis focuses on the most significant changes experienced by the workforce in the technical, behavioral and political domains, as a consequence of the productive restructure of the Brazilian industry. It draws on the author s comprehensive literature review and her own research on the evolution in the last twenty years, of six industrial sectors: automobile, white line electro-domestic, chemical-petrochemical, textile, shoe and telecommunication equipment. The technological and organizational modernization of the production process has led to the development of a new technical profile in the workforce. It is characterized by multiple-task performance, an increase in the demand for formal education and by the association of traditional learning-by-doing training with conventional instruction at an educational institution outside the factory. There is also a new behavioral profile, emphasized by the cooperation and involvement of the workers in the enterprise s goals. This new tendency is the most evident element of the control strategies adopted at fioor leveI. Lastly, the new political profile indicates a substantial shift in the class relations which has been fundamental for the deepening of the restructure processo An increasing individualization of the relationship between capital and labor tends to gain space, and consequently, the trade unions become marginalized. AlI the aforementioned aspects point towards the development of a new structure of managerial control which differs ITom that of the taylorist-fordist fabric regimes whilst securing the subordination of labor to capital in the context of the so-called flexible production
