RESUMO

This thesis describes the study of an articulated and coherent analogical model devoted to the comprehension of technological dynamics, the so called model of technological evolution. The model design, based on analogies (similarities) between technological dynamics and biological evolution, has been structured and debated by researchers of different areas, such as philosophers, biologists, technology historians, designers and economists. The study comprises the analysis and improvement of the models basic analogies, the investigation of the nature and extension of dissimilarities between technological dynamics and biological evolution and, finally, a simple test of the model based on a case study. It begins dealing with the role models play in scientific investigation, distinguishing different kinds of model and, more specifically, making explicit the analogical models characteristics. It then focuses on the most fundamental analogies between technological dynamics and biological evolution, proposing the refinement of some of the essential concepts of a technological evolution model. This is followed by a discussion of dissimilarities (disanalogies) that could lead to failure any attempt to structure the model, if it strongly departs from biological evolution properties. The core of this discussion is the investigation of possible lamarckian features of any model for technological evolution. In the final part, the model is applied to the historical dynamics of technologies attached to fuel ethanol production in Brazil.
