RESUMO

This six-month follow-up study is aimed at assessing the effect of different food practices on the hemoglobin levels of 150 infants born at Mutuípe (Bahia, Brazil) maternity facility. Blood tests were performed monthly to assess the subjects hemoglobin levels at which time data were gathered regarding their food intake. Information as to the infants birth conditions and their families socioeconomic status was also collected. The linear mixed effects model was used to investigate the associations at stake. An increase of 0.091g/dl (p=0.031) in hemoglobin levels was found for each month of exclusive breastfeeding whereas a decrease of 0.097g/dl (p=0.017) was shown for each month of mixed feeding. As a conclusion, inadequate food practices seem to be directly involved in the etiology of iron deficiency in this life stage, thus reinforcing the need for the promotion of infants healthy feeding by stimulating the implementation of exclusive breastfeeding promotion, protection and support measures in the first six months of life.
