RESUMO

Concerning to the present rules applied to the energy sector in Brazil, quality of services plays an important part in determining conditions in which better results will be achieved. The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency – ANEEL - has imposed severe penalties to the electric companies involving large amount of money in case of equipment failures. To respond to these issues many utilities have to find new actions to adapt to this new reality. From the time being, maintenance has always been an ally in the goal to reach a reliable supply of energy to the consumers and has also kept the role to preserve and extend the life of the equipment. The Companhia Hidro ElÃtrica do S. Francisco-CHESF responsible for the generation and transmission of energy in High and Extra High Voltage in the northeast of Brazil, has prioritizing actions in the maintenance engineering. The maintaining engineer has the challenge of changing the concept of maintenance to a new model, having to optimize the maintenance programs, reducing costs, improving the availability, and extend the life of equipment. In the present model of maintenance adopted by the utilities in the Brazil, the activities are planed in a time-based manner. In this way the equipment have to be taken out of the system in certain periods of time and kept de-energized as long as the service last. On the contrary, new concept points out to the opposite way that is to improve the availability of the equipment. According to this new maintenance concept, information system is also fundamental tool to develop new methods and plan actions to improve techniques in order to detect incipient defect. The actions include areas of specification, design review and the necessity of sensors installed in these piece of equipment to monitor the internal condition. For this reason, new diagnostic methods and monitoring techniques have now becoming available as tools to support decisions. The major task of this research work is to improve the knowledge of the power circuit breaker in the CHESF Power System. In order to carry out this work it was firstly made an statistical study of the company data base, classifying the equipment into several categories like manufacturer, voltage, type and analyzing in each class of equipment the operational history and unusual events. The goal was to define failure modes, identifying parameters that could be monitoring to detect incipient defect that leads to equipment failure, providing means for managing and as a consequence optimizing life and usability of the equipment. Finally, this report concerning to Monitoring and Diagnosing the High Voltage Circuit Breaker Status is expected to contribute to the success of the maintenance team of engineers in determining new ways to promote the longest service life and usability for the substation equipment
