RESUMO

This study had two main purposes (1) to develop and validate a job satisfaction questionnaire and (2) to investigate the levels of job satisfaction of employees of the Bank of Brazil, a mixed economy financial company. Job Satisfaction was defined as an individuals attitude towards general aspects of his/her work. Quantitative and qualitative studies were done that resulted in a two versions of a uni/multifactorial questionnaire of job satisfaction (QST and QST-R). The data gathered from the submission of the two versions of the QST to several samples of the Bank of Brazils employees were submitted to multivariate statistical analyses. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and invariance studies of the factorial structures (through Structural Equations Modeling-SEM) showed that both versions of the QST have well defined and stable hexafactorial structures and good internal consistency (alphas). Multivariate variance analysis (MANOVAS) and standard multiple regressions also revealed further evidence of QSTs validity and reliability and that men had higher scores on job satisfaction than women, implying the possible occurrence of a glass ceiling effect. An additional qualitative study with focus groups allowed a deeper investigation and understanding of the meaning, nature and implications of all the six factors that compose both versions of the QST, and a deeper understanding of individual experiences of job satisfaction. The analyses of the components of job satisfaction and the experience and testimonials of the employees suggested several training and administrative strategies that should be considered by the Bank of Brazils policy makers, such as training, possibility of promotion and work conditions
