RESUMO

This is a study on the effect of gamma radiation (from a Co source) on LDPE, i-PP and their blends. Samples were prepared by extrusion and injection, and subjected to radiation. Their transformations were followed by using IR spectra, DSC, tension-elongation measurements, density determinations and scanning electron microscopy. Under radiation, PEBD is cross-linked and its maximum tension, maximum elongation and Young modulus are increased. In the case of i-PP, doses up to 75 kGy have little effect either on maximum tension or in solubility in toluene; greater doses cause cross-linking, a large increase in the carbonyl index and a decrease in maximum tension. The LDPE-iPP mixtures are biphasic, and their mechanical behavior after being subjected to radiation is analogous to that of either polymer, depending on which component makes the continuous phase in the mixture.
