RESUMO

This work presents an experimental study to evaluate the applicability of a groundwater numerical modeling tool, the FEFLOW, in simulating the water-table level variation and the baseflow in a watershed that is representative of agricultural areas of the Cerrado biome. For developing this study, some representative areas of this environment were selected, in which an intense monitoring program was carried out in order to characterize them, physically and hydrologically. The collected data and the generated information were organized for the model calibration and verification processes and to be used as references for other hydrological studies in similar areas. The results obtained by using the measured data applied in a spatial distributed way were used to evaluate the possibility of utilizing those data grouped by soil class, texture or hydrogeological characteristics. The viability of using data collected directly from the literature was also verified, being demonstrated that, in some cases, this alternative can lead to significant errors. The results of this work indicate that it is possible to have coherent baseflow simulations in areas where the environment has been well represented. In those cases, good estimates of the phenomenon were achieved using only measured data and, as consequence, during the calibration process the model parameters values undergo small adjustments, improving the results yet maintaining its physical basis. However, in most of the cases difficulties were experienced on representing adequately the environment in the application of spatial distributed physical models, mainly when the study is accomplished in such a river basin scale.
