RESUMO

Simulated moving bed (SMB) is an important process for the continuous chromatographic separation. It uses a series of columns containing an adsorbent solid phase and all columns are connected in such a way to form a circuit that is divided in four zones, possessing two inlets (feeding and desorbent) and two outlets (extract and raffinate withdraws). The feeding is a homogeneous solution that contains two substances to be separated and whose concentrations are known for each one of them. The substances to be separated must have different degrees of interactions with the solid adsorbent. The desorbent (eluent) may be the liquid solvent used in the feeding solution, and its main function is to remove and to transport the substance that presented the stronger interaction with the adsorbent phase to the extract drawoff. In the raffinate is removed the substance that had weaker interaction with the adsorbent. Both, the inlets and outlets ports are periodically shifted along the liquid flow direction. This creates the simulated countercurrent movement of the solid phase in SMB. Such SMB process was initially created for application in the petrochemical industry in the sixties. Nowadays, its application to separate biomolecules such as proteins is gaining special attention by biotechnological industries...
