RESUMO

Coal hydrotreating experiments being developed at UNICAMP have motivated the development of microchemical studies presented in this work. Brazilian coals from RS have the morphological structure characteristic of sub-bituminous coals but complicated by a very high mineral content. These investigations included the development of coal surfaces polishing techniques to obtain clear and distinct images of the maceral phases with optical microscopy. It was possible to identify the main mineral inclusions and volumetric distribution of macerals. Optically selected regions were the subject of detailed linear scanning with an electron microprobe turned for several elements. It was then allowed the determination of the local concentrations of mineral materials. Specifically, it was possible to determine the spacial distribution of iron, sulfur and silican which can be associated with iron oxides, pyrites, kaolin and silica. Furthermore, their relative concentrations profiles were determined for the various macerals. An iron microprobe was used to detect the presence of elements of small atomic number (n <12) , and also the trace elements. From this study, it is possible to conclude that minerals on coals from RS are intimately mixed with the organic matter and that the degree of dispersion is very high for iron oxides. This may, of course, be an important contribution for the understanding of the anomalously high reactivities observed in the hydrogenation experiments.
