RESUMO

The forest exploitation for energy purposes in Brazil, is frequently practiced in an inefficient and predatory way, causing serious environmental damages and high costs during transportation, handling and storage. ln this context, the main objective of this research was to investigate the torrefaction process as an altemative and efficient treatment to biomass residues and fuewood, contributing to reduce the native forest exploitation, as well as to advance the competitiveness of biomass as an energy resource. To this end, a bench unit for biomass torrefaction was developed. The unit was evaluated using wooden briquettes as raw material reporting energy efficiency around 80 % and weight yields between 40 and 94 % depending on operation parameters. The briquettes showed good characteristics for energy applications, distinguishing themselves for high energy yields (of 50 to 96 %), low moisture contents, hydrophobic character, and also, increasing of around 15 % in high heating value. These characteristics together with high degree of standardization, make torrefaction an efficient treatment of biomass for energy purposes. A study was made in order to identify the main markets for torrefied biomass, and the economic viability of torrefaction was also studied. As a theoretical contribution, a mathematical model was developed, which contributes to the knowledge of the biomass torrefaction phenomenon, and introduces some design and diagnosis criteria
