RESUMO

This research examines discourses about masculinity(ies) as representative, relational, and male social practices constructions. Its main focus is the discursive construction of masculinity(ies) not as a personal identity, but as a semiotic construction that is simultaneously related with a place in gender relations, the practices through which men and women engage that place in gender, and the effects of these practices in bodily experiences, subjectivity and culture. The discourse is investigated from the perspectives of the Systemic Functional Linguistic (HALLIDAY, 1973, 1986, 1994, 2004; EGGINS, 1994, 2004), and the Theory of Multimodality (KRESS e VAN LEEUWEN, 1996, 2001). It is analyzed the lexical choices and the semiotic resources used by the participants to represent the male identity. The data was collected from a group of adolescents and young adults, male and female, which attended a group discussion in which they were asked to discuss the meanings of what a man is and what a woman is. Data was registered in VHS tape, and it was transcribed from it. Its goal is to analyze how the participants show and negotiate their identities in the discourse, which representations define their identities, and how they are articulated in an ideological and political system, according to Critical Discourse Analysis. The results of the analyzes show that discourses about masculinity(ies) reveal some changes between gender power relations, but in some other points they are yet organized hierarchically.
