RESUMO

The experiment was carried out in Lavras-MG with objective to evaluate different irrigation management strategies and their effect upon flowering induction, flower boom and grain production on pruned coffee, and their effect to increase productivity, save water and energy on irrigation. The study was conducted at the experimental area of Engineering Department at Universidade Federal de Lavras, on Acaià MG-1474 coffee cultivar, planted 3 meters between rows and 0.6 meters between plants. The plants were pruned in 2004. A drip irrigation system was used to irrigate the plants, one drip tubing per row. The statistical design was randomized blocks with four replicates and five irrigation treatment levels: A= non irrigated; B= irrigated throughout the whole year every time the water available was at most 25% of total available water (TAW); C= irrigated during whole year every time water available was at most 75% of TAW; D= treatment C during January, February, March, July, October, November and December and treatment B during April, May, June, August and September; E= treatment C during April, May, June, August and September. From July 2005 through June 2007 the water depth applied to replenish the water amount measured on a Class A evaporation Pan. From July 2007 through July 2008, matrix sensors (WatermarkÂ) were installed to evaluate soil potential between irrigation events. Each statistical plot was composed of 10 plants, being 5 taken for measurements. After data collection, a statistical analysis was carried by using the statistical Sisvar software. Possible interaction between irrigation management and coffee production was investigated. The irrigation management E for pruned coffee trees (treatment level with irrigation on April, May, June, August and September, replenishing water when 75% of the total available water at 0-40 cm layer was reached) was the most recommended due to technical and economical reasons.
