RESUMO

The inquiries on the historical areas must consider the perspective of the inhabitants, therefore these places are essential for arrange the memory and to affirm the identity of the individuals and the group. From this point of view, the present research aims identify the representation of the population in MossorÃ-RN, associated to the built heritage. To develop these subjects, it was adopted as theoretical and methodological support the social representations theory, that allows approaching the symbolic aspects and the imaginary related to the urban space. Forty interviews has been collected to compose the data base, distributed equally between groups of entailed people to the Center quarter: inhabitants, store workers, users and people in key positions. To analyse these informations, a quali-quantitative approach was adopted to make the investigation about the relation between individuals and cultural assets; the linking between representation, appropriation and place; the constructions that are on populationâs imaginary; and the values that forms the representations. The research intends to contribute for the study of the subjective dimension about the built heritage, for considering that any effective patrimonial preservation politics can be implemented without take into account the inhabitants perspective
