RESUMO

Facing today s energy crisis and the resulting environmental situation, society is searching to reduce those environmental impacts resulting principally from intensive use of fossil fuels. For the transport sector, one of these alternative solutions is to encourage collective transport based on clean technology, like fuel cell use. In this work an alternative use is being analyzed for the so-called Spilled Turbinable Energy of the ITAIPU Hydroelectric Power Plant, in order to hydrogen production for transport sector. The substitution of the current urban collective Diesel bus fleet with fuel cell buses in Foz do Iguaçu city was used as a case study. Four hydrogen production and supply models were proposed and analyzed: a decentralized model and three centralized models. Economical, logistical and environmental considerations showed the centralized production-supply plant as the most appropriated and this one has been used to estimate the cost and price of hydrogen produced and sold by ITAIPU Hydroelectric Power Plant for the transport sector of Foz do Iguaçu city, exploring new market possibilities for electricity generators. The hydrogen production cost obtained was US$ 2,86/kg and the price analysis of the hydrogen showed that the electrolyzer system cost has the most impact and the carbon credits represents the least impact on these study conditions
