RESUMO
Psittaciformes are the most popular pet birds in the world. Direct contact between humans and Psittaciformes is very comprehensive and the analysis of the bacterial flora of these birds is poorly known, and it can be highly pathogenic. Bacterial infections represent a major cause of enteric diseases in poultry, being the Salmonella one of the main agents involved in gastrointestinal diseases. Salmonellosis is the zoonosis more problematic for public health worldwide. This study aims to investigate the presence of Salmonella sp. on parrots owned by commercials breeders and conservationists of the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza. Feces were collected using sterile cloacae swabs in 182 clinically healthy birds. The microbiological procedures for isolation and identification of Salmonella followed the following steps: pre-enrichment in peptone water, followed by selective enrichment in Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth and Cystine-selectin, plating on MacConkey and Brilliant Green Agar and then subjected to presumptive biochemical identification. Colonies suspected of belonging to the genus Salmonella were tested serologically with antisera anti-flagella H antigen and anti-somatic antigen O. The colonies that were positive were stored on nutrient agar and sent to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) Rio de Janeiro (RJ) for serotyping. Of the 182 samples only 1.65% were positive for Salmonella, being isolated only in three species of Psittaciformes, Salmonella Lexington in Amazona aestiva (1 / 31), Salmonella Saintpaul in Ara chloroptera (1 / 16) and Salmonella Newport in Mellopsitcus undulatus (1/6). The results suggest a low prevalence of Salmonella in these birds.
