RESUMO

The aim of this study is to analyze the regional production profile of sugar-cane agribusiness in Paraná and its implications for the economy of producing municipalities. The methodological procedures involve: literature review, data collection and exploratory spatial data analysis. Exploratory spatial data analysis allows the verification of the existence of spatial correlation between the selected variables. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of spatial concentration, of local economic growth and of development of the sugar industry in Paraná. The study works with the hypothesis that the presence of the sugar cane agro-industrial activity affects the local economic growth of the municipalities in Paraná. In addition to verifying the presence of clusters, the study provides background information on the socioeconomic implications of the presence of agribusiness in certain regions through exploratory spatial data analysis. The results show that municipalities with high productivity of sugar-cane in Parana state are surrounded by similar municipalities featuring productive clusters. These clusters have a spatial association with various socioeconomic variables. The bivariate analysis indicates the presence of positive effects, given a positive spatial association with socioeconomic indicators and negative. The negative results are represented by the average earnings of workers in the sector below the state average and the monoculture, arising from the presence of agribusiness. The results indicate that the effects arising from the presence of the sugar industry on a particular region are varied and also show a positive spatial association between the presence of the industry and local economic growth of municipalities, with some caveats.
