RESUMO

The use of powdered activated carbon (PAC) in some Brazilian plants has happened without any accompaniment in the variation of the final water quality, as a result of this tecnology. This way, the objective of this work is to study the PAC influence on the water treatment supply from sanitary umprotected sources that provide a large part of the Campinas Metropolitan Region , SP, Brazil. An experimental investigation was developed about the influence of the use of PAC on the superficial water supply pretreatment, in different dosages and residence times, as well. PAC from different manufactures were used during the work, presenting different results. Coagulation diagrams were gotten in the sweep coagulation in order to get the best operation zone for the next process of PAC application. Points on turbity and color removal, pH values variation, iron and manganese salts, and total organic carbon (TOC) as well, were investigated. The investigation results show the importance of using the coagulation diagram in the PAC application in convencional plants, as weIl the PAC sources, concerning at its fisical characteristics and adsorption proprierties. The work outstands the necessity of making the phisical, adsorption, chemical and phisiochemical tests before the PAC application. Afier filtration by a hatman 40 filter , the aparent colar and turbidity levels obteíned were according to Brazilian laws.
