RESUMO

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of different smear layer treatments: direct application over smear layer (SL), etching with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds (P A), sandblasting with 50Jlm oxide aluminum for 10 seconds (OA) and etching with 0.5 M EDTA pH 7.0 for 2 minutes (ED) on bond strength (BS) of three adhesive systems: Prime &Bond NT/Dentsply (PB), Clearfil Mega Bond/Kuraray Co. (CMB) and Etch &Prime 3.0/Degussa (EP). Thirty-six third molars were sectioned on middle crown with a high concentrated diamond disc and abraded with a SiC 600 grid paper. Teeth were divided randomly into twelve groups according to treatment and adhesives used. Resin "crowns" with 10.0 mm high were constructed incrementally with TPH Spectrum/Dentsply composite and storaged in distilled water at 37:1:1 °C for 24 hours. Bonded specimens were serially sectioned in both "x" and "y" directions transversally to the bonded interface to obtain four repetitions of bonded sticks, per tooth (n=12). Each bonded stick was tested under tension in a Bencor Multi-T testing assembly (Danville Engineering Co, Danville) at 0.5 mm/min. Superficial effects produced by different techniques and the bonded interface were observed on scanning electron microscope (SEM) on 2000X and 1000X magnifications, respectively. Mean bond strength of specimens tested (MPa) were: PB/SL= 40.17:1:6.14, PBIPA= 38.42:1:9.30, PB/OA= 38.58:1:12.26 and PBIED= 44.55:1:2.98; CMB/SL= 21.13:1:4.27, CM/PA= 32.89:1:10.13, CM/OA= 25.74:1:4.09, CMIED= 28.37:1:7.83; EP/SL= 12.8:1:4.21, EPIPA= 17.04:1:2.99, EP/OA= 11.38:1:3.60 and EPIED= 17.72:1:0.84. Data were statistically evaluated by ANOV A and Tukey testo Statistically significant differences were observed among adhesives (pO.O5)
