RESUMO

This research analyzed the possibility of foreign language acquisition based on an educational experience, carried out in two distinct contexts, but complementary to one another – face-to-face and virtual. The subjects involved in this research came from public schools and participated in a non-governmental organization called Educafro, an ONG that initially dealt with the education of Brazilians of African descent , but extended its work to other individuals and to other groups also excluded because of income. For 10 weeks, we were involved in an experimental English language course, that focused on situations of language use by means of social interaction among the groups that we set up, so that we could answer the requests of the subjects involved in the research, whose concerns were centered on the acquisition of fluency, so that, first of all, they might have the opportunity to be absorbed in the work force, and , secondly, so that they might take college entrance examinations to be admitted to public universities. Considering the beliefs of these students, in this research we examined the possibility of social inclusion, in the work force, and about the need for better quality in the educational system. Based on the data that we elicited, we were able to proceed with an analysis of both contexts – the face-to-face and the virtual – looking at several aspects such as (a) interlanguage, (b) strategic competence, (c) social interaction, (d) emotional involvement. To sum up, we argue that the use of the Internet as a complement to faceto-face classes in foreign language acquisition possibilities represent a new opportunity for students to develop and improve their potential, bringing together both teacher and students. In addition, the use of the Internet may provide students with direct contact with the target-language, opening the possibility of use it in other places, at home, at work , whenever they need and want.
