RESUMO

This dissertation has as purpose to study the political and ideological position of Veja magazine from 1995 to 1998, first FHC government, considering the consolidation moment of Brazil’s neoliberal politics. We went through the relation of the magazine with the neoliberalism, its contribution for the application of general ideas of neoliberalism to the Brazilian situation. We proceeded to a characterization of media according to the political theory and the peculiarities of the gender magazine of information and opinion. With the purpose of locate the research in the most general political reality and in the Brazilian’s political situation, we carried out a study about the neoliberal ideology and the application of the neoliberal politics in Brazil. The theoretical reflections of Antonio Gramsci about the conquest and maintenance of hegemony in capitalist societies, its distinctions between the civil and the political society and the functional identity between both levels of Estate in broad respect, guided the analysis. Media in capitalist societies was defined by Gramsci as a private equipment of hegemony which belongs to the civil society’s level and works as an arm of Estate, acting in the formation of consensus around the political project that represents the interests of the dominant and leader class, under the direction of the group in the power of the Estate. Like this, the opinion institution in the civil society act in the realization of the group of theoretical activities and practices and it’s thorough them a class or classes alliance ensure its power, forming a group of relations of production and ensuring the consensus of governors. The political and ideological standing of the magazine was analyzed with basis on the selection and in the treatment given to the news related to the following subjects: education, health, foresight, job and the relations of work, privatizations, economic stability and economic growth. We analyzed reports produced by Veja in the period where the magazine diagnosed the bankrupt of the public services and the Estate’s downfall capacity of investment, the magazine defended the privatizations and the reforms of the foresight and the labour legislation, the magazine also hided the unemployment or presented it as an inevitable phenomenon and praised the stability and the economical growth conquested with Plano Real. In this way the magazine carried out a task of ideological diffusion, showing favorable opinion to the reforms guided to the market according to the neoliberal ideology teaches.
