RESUMO
The impact of cotton plant trichomes on the cotton leafworm Alabama argillacea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and its predator Podisus nigrispinus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was studied in the laboratory and greenhouse. Initially, the development, survival and reproduction of A. argillacea in cotton plants with high and low trichome density were studied showing an increase in the duration of the larval and pupal phases of this insect. Subsequently, the mobility of P. nigrispinus nymphs in cotton plants with high and low trichome density was studied. In general, the walking speed was higher for P. nigrispinus nymphs of more advanced instars. However, P. nigrispinus nymphs with same age tended to walk more quickly in the parts of the plant and cotton genotypes with smaller trichome density. Finally, the development and survival of P. nigrispinus in cotton plants with high and low trichome density were studied, there being no effects trichomes on these characteristics of the predator. The duration of the pre-oviposition periods, oviposition, postoviposition and longevity and the number of eggs for female of P. nigrispinus, in the cotton plant genotypes with high and low trichome density did not affect the reproduction of the predator. The population characteristics of P. nigrispinus, assessed for life fertility and life expectancy tables were not prejudiced for the genotypes of cotton plants with high trichome density. For this, cotton plant genotypes with high trichome density should be considered in programs of integrated pest management using plant resistance and biological control.
