RESUMO

We perform ray tracing analysis on the imaging of white light objects by diffractive elements. Only the main direction of rays is considered within an approximation that do not consider the extension of the image point. We first make a brief report on the history and basic concepts of diffractive optical elements, then we make a complete study of inverted depth ("pseudoscopic") imaging by two diffraction gratings and one slit under white light, a new and simpler way to generate that kind of images directly from an object. We also show the existance of an ortoscopic image by diffractive elements under white light in the same system. In Append 1 we analyze imaging of a point object in monocromatic light, comparing calculated values with experiments we performed. This previous work was important in preparing our analytical and experimental techniques. In Append 2 we indicate many applications where our study could help to obtain quantitative results, as in the generation of images holoprojected on diffracting screens (holographic screens), the enlarging of holograms, holographic television and spatial telescopes
