RESUMO

This work aims at analyzing a set of postcards, produced by photographer and editor José Marques Pereira in the beginning of century XX, and recuperates the memory of Santos city stated in this narrative in a period when the postcard was the main means of mass visual communication. The study presents a brief history of photography starting from theoretical conceptions that indicate the essence of photographic phenomenon as the act of register. This approach enables us to understand that the photography is founded on a new “imagistic” language where its author, the photographer, has a great importance in the elaboration of visual discourse. The methodology for analyzing the postcards evidence to treat them as documents/ representations, testimonies of the registered occurrence and artistic creations made by the photographer-editor. The interpretative way follows the social and cultural investigation around the valorization of the registered/ edited subject within the period, without forgetting the specifications exam of the postcard esthetic language. At last, we found in the esthetic construction work of José Marques Pereira’s postcards the concern in documenting aspects of Santos city and its population during the period when they appear and disappear to the accelerated rhythm of social and urban transformations.
