RESUMO

The objective of this study was to identify and evaluate the competencies that comprise the profile of systems developers, particularly those at the beginning of their careers, that are most valued by managers in the software factories in Salvador, Bahia. To achieve this objective, the study first presented the concept of competencies and the concept of software factory. The profile of these specialists is also presented in context, defining two aspects that influence the training profile of specialists in this field: academic training and the job market. Data were analyzed qualitatively and were collected by carrying out field research within related companies. Data analysis took three separate aspects into consideration. First, the study verified whether there was a growth trend in software factory in Salvador. Next, the competencies most valued by managers of software companies in Salvador were identified. Finally, the study sought to identify factors that indicated an impact caused by these changes in the profile of the specialist on the structure of information technology training courses provided by colleges. In conclusion, the study presents the competencies identified by managers as being important, and concludes that in the development of software technical skills are the most valued qualities. With respect to growth in software factories in Salvador, it is not possible to define any growth trend, only a potential for growth that depends principally on the development of a software export market. With respect to academic training, the changes in the profile of the software specialist do not appear to be causing any significant impact. Nevertheless, it should be emphasized that interest has been shown by some managers in recruiting software developers in technical courses, which should guide graduates in nformation technology towards careers in analysis and software manufacture management.
