RESUMO

A transversal descriptive study was perfonned to record the characteristics, perceptions and behavior of mothers of visually impaired children. These children were in the first year of primary teaching and were identified during the "Olho no Olho" (eye on the eye) campaign, 2000. The sample was composed of 48 mothers of visually impaired children identified during the campaign. For the collection of data, a questionnaire was applied by interview. It was seen that the large majority ofthe mothers lived with their husbands or partners, 91.7 % stated that they had been to school, although just 2.1 % had completed fundamental schooling. As far as occupational categories were concemed,76,4% non-specialized manual services predominated among the mothers. The campaign showed that 61.7 % of the children were aged 7 and above and that the major cause of visual impainnent was toxoplasmosis (24.9%). Just 35.4 % of the mothers had been aware of the existence of visual problems before the campaign and 33.3% ofthe children had seen an ophthalmologist without receiving any type of orientation or prescription of optical or non-optical aids for utilization of the residual vision. The mothers reported difficultyin the educational progress in 79.2 % ofthe cases due to the children s visual problems. In general they demonstrated satisfaction with the pedagogical performance ofthe teachers (62.5 %), although they had doubts as to the children s learning (54.2 %) and as to whether they would complete their studies (50.0 %). It was observed that even afier the children were identified as visually impaired, 20.8 % of the mothers still referred to the absence of difficulty of the child at school in relation to their visual problem. They stated that nearly all the children (93.8 %) just used a common exercise book for reading activities at school and 10.4 % used an ampli:fiedphotocopy. Visits to the ophthalmologist, for various reasons, did not result in the prescription of optical or non-optical aids for the children or even specific orientation for the use of residual vision. This study highlighted the importance of the "Olho no Olho" campaign or similar visual screning projects with the teacher playing an importantrole
