RESUMO

This dissertation is focussed on the exploratory study of the application of environmental management. The intention was to understand why the system of environmental management was adopted, as well as way in which the concept of sustainable development was used. For that, the work used an historical approach, proceeded by an evaluation of existing concepts of environmental management. It sought to present a vision of the political arena with the development of agreements, reports, the evolution of civil society organised through NGOs and independents representatives groups. The work presents the experience of Scania Latin America in the implementation of environmental management in its Brazilian unit and the results obtained with the system. It presents a conclusion where it sought for to demonstrate that environmental management should not just be seen in the field of standards, but in wider processes with ethical and social responsibility
