RESUMO

One of the basic steps of the integrated pest management is the evaluation of pest population. For this, it is necessary to know how it is distributed on the field. Regarding the leaf-cutting ants, several studies have been developed to investigate their distribution as well as how to sample them adequately, but it is also necessary to improve such studies with the use of the Geostatistics. In this sense, the objective of this study was investigate whether there is spatial dependence among the leaf-cutting ant nests in eucalyptus plantations, in a region of Atlantic forest, of State of Minas Gerais. For this, the experimental variograms of three years data of evaluation, between 2002 and 2005, were constructed. The range of first sill of adjust model was estimated and it represents the maximum distance where there is spatial dependence between the observations. The optimum plot size, the Characteristic Operating (OC) and Average Sample Number (ASN) curves were estimated. The OC and ASN were used to evaluate the sequential sampling plan. It was concluded that exists spatial dependence between the leaf-cutting ant nests in eucalyptus plantation in that region and a "wave" model was adjusted. The range value was 35 m, indicating that the spatial distribution of nests is random until this distance. The optimum plot size for the sequential sampling plan is 20 m2. The plots must be thrown randomly at distance at least 35m from each other. The making control decision must be done at least at 10th sample. It was ended that when the population density is next to the control level, the sample size for making control decision is higher
