RESUMO

This work analyzed a specific case of displacement/ resettlement of families hurt by dam building. Implantation of the UHE Candonga in the district of Santa Cruz do Escalvado has forced the displacement of families from the district of São Sebastião do Soberbo to New Soberbo, a settlement artificially built to shelter the displaced families. Within this context, this work is based on a qualitative analysis from the perspectives of the families involved, of the transition from old São Sebastião do Soberbo to New Soberbo by means of spatial, economic, social and cultural changes. The thesis is based on theoretical references stressing the contradictions resulting from the process of modernization. Dam building is understood as a reflection of the logic of capitalistic rationality, based on the search for development and progress and on the increasing need of energy to maintain and accelerate the countrys growth. As in every process of dam implantation projects, displacing is always permeated by conflicts represented by antagonistic interests of the projects entrepreneurs and the displaced families, who, believing in the promises made, initially desired the dam. Although masked by the possibility of a better life, displacement failed to reproduce the living conditions of the previously riverine families. Thus, migration, which, at a given moment, may have represented possibilities of new opportunities for those that moved from the district, later turned out to be the only option for the families, forced to leave their lands to give room to the dam lake. Within this context, global order rationality imposes a sole way of living to all, being thus, uprooting. The result obtained clearly shows that implantation of a hydroelectric project generates much greater consequences than those predicted in its impact studies. Such projects break with customs, social practices and ways of living by taking over the space and using it for private purposes.
