RESUMO

At the Epilepsy Outpatient unit of Unicamp School of Medicine Hospital, ninety six patients were diagnosed as having the .epileptic form of neurocysticercosis in the period of time between 1982 and 1986. In approximate1y 15.% of the patient popu1ation with epilepsy that we studied, the etiology of the seizures was neurocysticercosis. Diagnosis was made by means of Computed Tomography (CT), p1ain skull X-rays and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) analysis. We used the following diagnostic cri teria: 1. Certainty - when cysticerci were demonstrated in central nervous system tissue through surgery (six patients). 2. Security - a) when antibodies against cysticerci were detected in CSF by means of complement fixation test or indirect hemagglutination and two or more cystic lesions were displayed by CT (12 patients). b) when cysticerci were obtained after biopsy of muscle or subcutaneous tissue and the CT showed two or more cystic lesions (two patients)
