RESUMO

In contrast with the organization of establishing landmarks for the predominant political memory in Brazil, the commemorations of Canudos War centennials provided the comprehension of emerging alternate voices to the instituted memory. Intimately linked to different political projects of past reconstruction, these commemorations produced, in the 1990s, an intense cultural production in the media, universities, social movements, Army and in folk culture. In the first part - History and Memory in the Commemorations Age the image of a puzzle is the starting point for developing a theoretical-methodological debate about the problems raised in the thesis, in terms of the complex relations between history and memory in contemporarity. Thus, I carry out a historiography review, associating cultural history and the history of memory, aiming at inquiring the usages of memory in the contemporary Brazilian society and its interactions with the constitution of the national identity. The image of the palimpsest was used to think the historiography and the memory in the commemorations of Canudos War. In the second part of the thesis Filigrees of Memory in Canudos Centennials (1993-1997) I investigate how the commemorations took place in social movements, civil society institutions and in the State apparatus universities and army emphasizing the battles of Canudos memory. Here we notice a true obsession of the present in relation to the past, with the constitution of realms of memory in Conselheiros backlands (Sertão do Conselheiro) - the region in which Antônio Conselheiro left traces during his wandering as a preacher. In the third and last part History, Media and Images of Memory in Canudos Centennials I carry out an analysis of the representations produced about the centennials in mass and electronic communication media, aiming at comprehending the intersections of politics, memory, mass culture and social identity, considering the present notion of Canudos as a media event. From the notion of locations of memory, constructed by Pierre Nora, I stress the importance of mass and electronic communication media as privileged spaces for archiving and producing the contemporary memory. As a reply to the growing emergence of a peasant awareness that interpellated (and still interpellates) all the Brazilian society, the symbolic battles surrounding the commemorations of Canudos War centennials (1993-1997) offered the researcher a great variety of representations of Canudos. From one aspect, a more personal and intimate reading of the communitys life emerged, through photographs, videos and fine arts, in hich the artists guided themselves in oral tradition, searching for an association with the current fight for land in contemporary Brazil. At the same time, some permanencies in contemporary representations of Canudos are perceptible, generated in different supports related to the period of the war itself, such as the photographs of Flávio de Barros and the existing presence of Euclides da Cunha in the construction of Canudos memory, especially due to the prominence obtained by Sérgio Rezendes film, the high-budget motion picture produced to celebrate Canudos War centennial.
