RESUMO
The objective of this dissertation is to study the way in which the metaphors in the novel Lavoura arcaica, written by Raduan Nassar in 1975, contribute, as a stylistic resource, in building the meanings of the work. The studies of Semantics and Stylistics guided us in establishing a set of metaphors, from within Lavoura arcaica, which maintain semantic and morphosyntactic relations among themselves, creating a metaphorical system that contributes in establishing the narrator\ s world view. The choice of metaphors as the object of study in our research was due to the relationship this figure of speech establishes with the text\ s meanings. The subjective character of the first person narrator and the aspect of intimacy in the psychological prose parts are traits that are reinforced by the use of metaphors in the novel. We selected and analyzed the metaphors identifying the narrator-character with nature, through the use of plant and animal lexicon. The generational conflict theme, manifested in the father-son opposition, is also revealed in the identification, favored by the use of this type of metaphor, of the narrator with the aspects of nature relative to the absence of rationality and cultural and moral mechanisms of emotional control. The result of the study is a group of 51 metaphorical expressions, classified by ramifications of the metaphor\ s generating theme man is nature where the characteristics of the metaphors formation and their relation to each other are commented. This systematizing of metaphors is inspired by the everyday metaphorical systems, presented in Metaphors We Live By (JOHNSON e LAKOFF, 1980).
