RESUMO

Leishmaniose is an infectious disease, not contagious. It is caused by the Leishmania protozoa. In addition, it is transmitted by the bite of an insect. Also known as Baurus ulcer and bad sore, leishmaniose, most of the times, is presented as an ulceration in a discovered area of the body. Commonly, where the bite occurred. Until this moment, there is not any vaccine to prevent from leishmaniose. The toxicity and the fact that it is hard to administrate the medicines are factors that difficult the treatment. The plants show great potential as systems of production of rearranged proteins. The utilization of plants for the production of medicinal products has been required in the important pharmaceutical. They has shown a promising economical potential due to the low cost of production and the fact that they represent the biomass of lowest. In this work, the gene of the antigen (lack), potentially responsible for immunization against leishmaniose, was sequenced, cloned and used to transform lettuce (Lactuca Sativa L.), via Agrobacterium in order to obtain transgenic plants that have as a characteristic the expression of the LACK protein able to provoke the formation of the antibody against the leishmaniose.. Although the functioning process of this protein is not well-known, it is known that it is a potential antigen for the disease and it can hinder the reproduction of the protozoa in the human organism. At first, any plant could be chosen. However, lettuce was chosen due to its quick production and due to the fact that the vegetable can be eaten uncooked. Transgenic plants expressing antigens present great facilities in the expense of the production. In addition, comestible plants permit the inoculation of the vaccine through direct ingestion. There is no need for purification and for a previous processing. Furthermore, the cells of the plants can protect vaccinal antigens from the action of gastric juice. The application of victuals as a vehicle of vaccination may be important to reduce expenses and reach a larger amount of people.
