RESUMO

This treaty is of an essentially empirical nature and presents a systematic and encompassing study about the application of Evolutionary Computation techniques towards the adaptive solving of non-trivial problems under the discipline of modular intelligent systems engineering. The series of experiments conducted and reported along the text had as main stimulus the assessment of the potentials behind some advanced evolutionary algorithms, inspired from artificial models of symbiosis and hybridism, with regard to an array of issuesjrequirements pertaining to modular systems raised by the author. The target domains of investigation include the tailored design of heterogeneous neural network architectures; the automatic and hierarchical development of heterogeneous ensembles of feedforward neural networks; the adaptive selection of support vector machine instances for setting up ensembles of SVMs; the entire configuration of mixture of experts architectures; ando the emergent organization of teams made up of autonomous agents. Other correlated projects under the same research umbrella are also succinctly touched upon
