RESUMO

The purpose of the present study was to run an in vitro analysis of the prophylaxis with sodium bicarbonate jet followed by remineralization immersed into artificial saliva on normal and demineralized bovine enamel. Sixty specimens of enamel (4,0mm X 4,0mm) divided into four groups were utilized as follow: I- 15 specimens of normal bovine enamel treated with sodium bicarbonate jet and immersed into simulated saliva for four hours; II- 15 specimens of normal bovine enamel treated with sodium bicarbonate jet and immersed into simulated saliva for 28 days; III- 15 specimens of bovine enamel with artificial dental caries treated with sodium bicarbonate jet and immersed into simulated saliva for four hours; and IV- 15 specimens of bovine enamel with artificial dental caries treated with sodium bicarbonate jet and immersed into simulated saliva for 28 days. The determination of the superficial microhardness and the quantification of the amount of rupture were realized with a microdurometer and a rugosimeter, respectively. The results showed that the prophylaxis with sodium bicarbonate modified the superficial microhardness of the normal enamel from 300.47KHN to 298.16KHN, and the enamel with artificial dental caries from 193.47KHN to 272.47KHN. Also, the rupture of both, the normal enamel immediately after the prophylaxis with sodium bicarbonate jet was of 0.319um, and the enamel with artificial dental caries was of 0.719?m. The immersion into the artificial saliva modified the superficial microhardness of both, the group I from 294.40KHN to 292.73KHN, and of the group II from 301.93KHN to 302.73KHN. The immersion into the artificial saliva modified the superficial microhardness from 274.06KHN to 266.13KHN for the group III, and from 270.86KHN to 303.66KHN for the group IV. The results also demonstrated that the permanence into the artificial saliva modified the rupture of both, the group I from 320um to 0.290um, and the group II from 0.315um to 0.257um. Finally, the immersion into the saliva modified the rupture of the group III from 0.725um to 0.605um, and of the group IV from 0.714um to 0.604um. Based on the methodology employed in this study, the conclusion regarding the prophylaxis with sodium bicarbonate jet was that (1) the superficial microhardness of the bovine enamel with artificial dental caries is significantly modified while the normal enamel is not, and (2) there is a significantly larger rupture of the bovine enamel with artificial dental caries in comparison to the normal enamel. Lastly, the conclusion regarding the artificial saliva indicates that (1) in four hours, the artificial saliva does not significantly modifies the superficial microhardness of the normal bovine enamel and of the enamel with artificial dental caries; however, it does significantly modifies the rupture of enamel with artificial dental caries, and (2) in 28 days, the artificial saliva significantly modifies the microhardness of the bovine enamel with artificial dental caries as well as the rupture of the normal enamel and of enamel with artificial dental caries
