RESUMO

An ecological study conducted between the years 2003 to 2010 with monthly data on the number of mortality and morbidity from respiratory diseases, areas for monoculture of sugar cane and spatial distribution of outbreaks of fires in Botucatu, São Paulo. Data were extracted, respectively, of databases DATASUS AND THE Institute for Space Research (INPE). The association of the data was analyzed for determination of scenarios developed through the use of tools of Geographic Information System - GIS and these indicators of transformation and occupation of the territory of the municipality. This study aimed to demonstrate the relationship of mortality and morbidity due to respiratory factors in Botucatu, the spatial dispersion of records of outbreaks of fire and the area planted to sugar cane monoculture, as well as to analyze the correlation between variables of interest. The analyzes suggest a relationship between emissions of pollutants derived from burning of sugar cane with the levels of mortality and morbidity. This study allowed to observe in the same perspective, data on human exposure to the chemicals produced in fires and respiratory health problems that impacted the population.
