RESUMO
This paper aims to taxonomically describe a new species of a microhimenopteran parasitoid of the genus Muscidifurax based on morphological and molecular characters. The genus of parasitoids Muscidifurax (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) comprises five described species (Kogan &Legner, 1970), all ectoparasitoids of dipterous pupae and, among them, four species are used to control synanthropics flies (Taylor et al., 1999). Due to their morphological similarity, it is difficult to differentiate these species and the species of the genus Muscidifurax are considered to be a complex an in process of speciation. Several biochemical techniques have been tested to diagnose and identify the species of this genus, but not all have been successful. Recently, counting with gas chromatographic methods and PCR-RFLP were observed pronounced differences using cuticular hydrocarbons profile and the analysis of restriction fragments (RFLP) of the nuclear ribosomal region ITS 1 (Geden et al., 1998; Taylor et al., 1999). These methods allowed to categorically distinguishing the species of Muscidifurax. Therefore, in the present study we propose to use samples of the parasitoid Muscidifurax n. sp. found in a layers farm located in the region of Santa Cruz da Conceição, SP, Brazil with the objective to identify this new species using morphological observations associated with the analysis of the hydrocarbons profiles and molecular markers obtained by PCR-RFLP. We have already studied these parasitoids during our Masters degree (Vendramin, 2001), to characterize the reproductive development and behavior. We obtained important results of reproductive rate and population growth on Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) pupae, constituting a promising agent for the control of blow flies.
