RESUMO

Studies performed by Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology indicate the prospective memory as a system responsible for the planning of future tasks and data retrieve that will be accessed further on. This study aimed to investigate prospective memory in a sample of elderly from Recife-PE, using a Portuguese version, obtained by back translation of the instrument of developed by Smith et al (2000), the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ). Our analysis was compared to the previous study of Benites et al, 2007, which used a preliminary but debatably translated version of PRMQ. The 16 original items were maintained in order to evaluate selfreported impaiment of of prospective and retrospective memory. 115 subjects participated in this study (70 Â 6,2, years old ) originally from the Clinic Hospital-UFPE, Unati (Third Age Open University) and P.A.I. (Program of Attention to the Senior at the Areias General Hospital-Recife). The possible answers to the questions ranged in a scale, going from Always until Never, according to the intensity of complaints. A major frequency of similar answers, both in RS (36,84%) and Recife (58,22%) was found at the question P42 (retrospective memory): "Do you fail to recognize a place you have visited before? ", and the response was never. Comparing both studies, it was evident that the answers in questions that point compromising of memory, therefore in the RS the highest concentration was in always and fewer in never, in contrast to a higher frequency of never in Recife, without a significant concentration in always. It is important to highlight that the results of analysis from RS and PE were partially similar, however, the the sample from RS presents more prospective memory impairment when compared to the population of this study. The PRMQ presents imperfections in some questions that are particularly confusing. This preliminary study demands a further analysis of the PRMQ and the planning of a local instrument adapted to the cultural reality of our country
