RESUMO

The main goal of this study is to evaluate the behaviour of instantaneous heart rate and oxygen comsumption in the continuous exerci se protocol. Ten (10) male adolescents ranging ITom 12 to 15 years old, on stage 5 of sexual maturation, not participating in any regular physical training program, were studied. All volunteers were submitted to: 1) antropometric and clinical evaluation, in order to remove the possibilities of pathologies which might interfere with the results; 2) clinical ergometry with continuous exerci se protocol in cycle ergometer ( CP 15 W /min. increase ramp workload) until physical exhaustion, with continuous register ofheart rate (HR). (The aim of this procedure is to evaluate the physical conditions of the volunteers and to define the increase of exercise protocol in the evaluation offunctional capacity); 3) evaluation of functional capacity with continuous exerci se protocol in cycle ergometer (CP ? 15 W/min. ramp) until physical exhaustion, with continuous register of heart rate (HR) and of ventilatory variables such as oxygen comsumption (VO2), pulmonar ventilation (V) and carbon dioxide production(VCO2). Through the evaluation of the functional capacity, it was possible to determine the figures of the cardiorespiratory variables in anaerobic threshold at maximum effort and the instantaneous heart rate. A global analysis of data resulting fIom this study suggests that: 1) the physical capacity and the maturation of the autonomic nervous system of adolescents ranging from 12 to 15 years old seems to approach the complete maturation of an adult; 2) the heart rate curve presented a decreasing growth, departing from the anaerobiose threshold and with 50% of maximum load; suggesting a protecting mechanism to stay the mechanical efficiency ofthe heart
