RESUMO

The clogging phenomenon is a yet to be solved problem and there is little knowledge about the fluid-dynamic relation to inclusions deposition. The purpose of this study is to help to understand the inclusions deposition mechanism, employing a CFD model to describe the steel flow in a stopper rod. A 3D geometry of the nozzle region was built and the results were obtained using Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS). The study of the deposition of inclusions was implemented with two different models: Lagrangian and ASM (Algebraic Slip Model). Different stopper rod openings were evaluated in order to visualize the steel flow through the nozzle and compare the alumina deposition rate. It was observed that larger stopper rod openings lower the inclusions deposition rate. In the second part of this study, the gas is injected through 16 points located at the nozzle to evaluate its influence on the aluminum deposition rate. The comparison between numerical results showed that the gas injection has reduced the deposition rate on the stopper rod region.
