RESUMO

The proton-proton elastic scattering in the center of mass energy region 23 to 63 GeV is investigated through a multiple diffraction model. As an introduction to the subject, a detailed review of the fundamental basis of the Multiple Diffraction Formalism (FDM) and a survey of the multiple diffraction models (geometrical) currently used are presented. The goal of this investigation is to reformulate one of these models, which makes use of an elementary (parton-parton) amplitude purelly imaginary and is not able to predict the p-parameter (the ratio of the forward real and imaginary parts of the hadronic amplitude). Introducting a real part for the elementary amplitude proportional to the imaginary part, improvements in the formalism are obtained. It is shown that this new approach is able to reproduce all experimental data on differential and integrated cross sections (total, elastic and inelastic), but not the r -parameter as function of the energy. Then, starting from fittings of this parameter an overall reproduction of the physical observables is obtained, with the exception of the dip region (diffractive minimum in the differential cross section) in some energies. Through a critical study of the multiple diffraction models it is shown that overall description are also not firmly reached in all these models. Finally, alternatives to improve the results in a future research are suggested and discussed
